What is Leptin and How Does if Affect Weight Loss?

leptin cycle

Leptin is one of the most important hormones in your body, and it plays a major rule in weight loss, appetite, fat storage, fat burning etc… Leptin is essentially the hormone that controls weight loss.

Leptin has been labeled the “fat hormone”, “obesity hormone”, “starvation hormone”, and the “weight loss” hormone among others.

Leptin is a protein that is created in your fat cells and it sends signals through your bloodstream up to your brain. These signals include telling your brain when you are hungry, if you have enough stored energy in your fat cells, if your stored energy is low etc.

In return, depending on the signals sent, your brain will then tell your body how to react.

For example, if the signals that your Leptin sends is that your stored energy levels are good, then your brain will tell your fat cells to act in a normal metabolic manner.

If the signals sent are that your stored energy levels are low, then your brain will tell your cells to go into starvation mode. This means that your metabolism will be slowed down, and weight loss becomes difficult.

In general, the higher your Leptin levels, the better, as long as they are firing the correct signals.

Lets take a look at a common scenario that involves weight loss and Leptin…

This has probably happened to you, or to someone you know. You dive into the latest and greatest diet that basically makes you cut a large amount of calories.

For the first few week, things are good and you are losing some weight. Then all of a sudden, the weight loss comes to a screeching halt and no matter what you do, it seems you cannot lose anymore weight. In many cases, you actually start putting some of the pounds you lost back on. This is called rebound weight gain.

Here is the reason this happens …

Due to the drop in calories and food intake, your Leptin levels have dropped below your personal threshold. This means Leptin has sent signals to your brain that it needs to go into starvation mode. In return, your brain tells your fat cells to go into storage mode, which means your metabolism slows down. What you are left with is the dreaded weight loss plateau that leads to extreme frustration and loss of motivation, because no matter what you do or how much you workout, you cannot lose anymore weight.

Eventually, you will then hit the rebound weight gain stage, and all of the weight you lost will reappear, leaving you wondering what went wrong.

This is the problem with crash diets and diets that require you to cut a large amount of calories. They work in the beginning, but what they fail to mention is that in the long run, you end up completely defeated and worse off than when you started.

And unfortunately for females it gets worse …

Scientific research has discovered that women have nearly twice the amount of Leptin in their body compared to men, which is great.

BUT, if this is true, then why do women have a harder time losing weight than men do?
This is because the female body is about 3 times less responsive to Leptins signal to burn fat. So, although women have 2 times the amount of Leptin, their body does not use its fat burning potential to the max.

The other piece of bad news is that while dieting a woman’s Leptin levels usually drop twice as much and twice as fast as that of a mens. So basically, going on a strict diet is like putting the brakes on and slowing down your metabolism.

This is the reason women often experience slow results and eventually run head first into a frustrating plateau that seems impossible to break through.

What this all means is that women have to work a little differently to properly control their Leptin so that they can essentially turn their fat burning switch to ON.

fat switch on

This is the reason diets that strictly focus on Leptin have become so popular. One of the most popular Leptin based programs is The Venus Factor. It is a complete weight loss system that is specifically designed for women. It is a diet and workout program that allows females to gain complete control of the Leptin so that it is working for you and not against you, and women have been seeing great results.

As we mentioned, women have 2 times more Leptin than men, so this means that women have a better ability to lose weight. However in order to do so, they must make some changes and trigger their Leptin to work for them.

This is exactly what The Venus Factor focuses on, setting your body up so that when you combine the diet plan with the workout program, your fat burning ability sky rockets.

What is Leptin Resistance and How Does it Destroy your Weight Loss Efforts?

leptin resistance

To make things even more complicated there is something called Leptin resistance.

Take for example, those who are overweight. They have a lot of Leptin, so the signals should be telling the brain to control their appetite and telling their metabolism to operate effectively. If that is the case, then why are they always hungry and continue to gain weight?

This is because Leptin resistance, and this means that your brain is not receiving the correct signals.

When someone has Leptin resistance, their Leptin levels are very high and they are fat, but due to Leptin resistance, the brain cannot see that the person is fat. Essentially, their body is fat, but their brain is in starvation mode.

In a normal person without Leptin resistance, when Leptin levels rise, their brain shuts down their appetite making them feel full. In those with Leptin resistance, as Leptin levels rise, nothing happens so they keep eating trying to achieve the feeling of being full.

When Leptin is low, a normal person is hungry, food looks a lot better, and once they eat they get a feeling of fullness and satisfaction. In someone who has Leptin resistance, they keep chasing the satisfaction, but their brain never receives that signal.

Controlling your Leptin levels can be tricky. If someone falls into Leptin resistance and they cannot get a handle on their Leptin, then they will end up being obese.

If you are interested in taking control of your Leptin hormone or are looking to regain control of your Leptin hormone, then you should look into a Leptin based diet such as The Venus Factor or another weight loss program that focuses on Leptin.

The Key Rules of a Leptin Diet

leptin diet rules

A Leptin diet does not require you to count calories or starve yourself until you are dizzy and can barely walk. It also will not keep you from eating the foods you love and crave.

However, there are some rules, and it will take some willpower in order to successfully participate in a Leptin diet.

Here are some of the basic rules of a Leptin diet…

Leptin diet rule #1 – Never eat after dinner.

One of the most important aspects of a Leptin diet is scheduling. You will need to get on a consistent schedule, and part of that schedule means not eating anything after dinner. Ideally, you want to make sure at minimum you eat dinner 3 hours before you go to bed. So if you go to bed at 9 o’clock, make sure you have finished up dinner by 6 o’clock.

Pretty simple, right?

Leptin diet rule #2 – Make sure you eat a breakfast that is very high in protein.

For breakfast, you need to make sure you eat 25-35 grams of protein. Starting your day off with a breakfast that is high in protein will keep you feeling fuller throughout the day and keep you from eating snacks between meals.

Study have shown that a high protein diet helps your body control food cravings. It is important when eating a high protein breakfast to try to eat foods that are lower in fats.

Leptin diet rule #3 – Stick to three meals a day.

When on a Leptin diet it is important that you stick to three meals a day. As mentioned above, a high protein breakfast and higher levels of protein at lunch and dinner will help you cut out the snacking.

If when starting out you cannot make it through the day without some snacks, don’t starve and stress yourself out, just make sure to snack on things like fresh veggies or peanuts or another healthier option.

Leptin diet rule #4 – Control your portion sizes.

You definitely do not need to starve yourself, but it is important to keep an eye on your portions. With portions these days larger than ever, it is a good idea to eat at a slower pace and stop eating as soon as you begin to feel full.

Leptin diet rule #5 – Cut some of those carbs out.

Again, nothing crazy, like cutting all carbs out, but be sure to cut some carbs out of each meal. A good range to shoot for is 50% carbs and 50% protein.

Its as simple as making some substitutes. Instead of going for white bread, mac and cheese, or pastas, choose options like leafy greens, cottage cheese, mushrooms, squash, carrots, eggplant and other healthy options.

There is obviously more to the diet, in order to get your Leptin completely under control and firing the correct signals better than ever, but these are some of the basic rules of  a Leptin diet.

The Conclusion on Leptin and Weight Loss

Many of those who have struggled to lose weight no matter what they do, have found success when taking up a Leptin diet. If you have been having a hard time shedding those extra pounds, this might just be the diet that’s in store for you.

As with any diet, it is also important to do some sort of exercise along side your diet. Whether it is exercising on your home treadmill, getting a gym membership, or joining an aerobics class, a solid workout routine is going to make a huge difference.

The nice thing about the Leptin diet is that is focuses on the hormone that actually controls a large portion of your weight loss. It allows you to take control of this hormone so that it works for you, whereas many other diets set you up so this hormone is working against you.

Many people refer to a Leptin diet as “turning your fat burning switch on”, and when you have a solid workout program along side your diet, the weight can come off pretty quick.

Now that you are a Leptin pro, take a look around and choose a Leptin diet that you want to start up.
